In order to fill vacancies in the mining industry, Australia is permitting those with the right qualifications to emigrate by applying to the General Skilled Migration Programme. A mining engineer who has recently graduated can pull in a salary of around A$100,000 per year. In order to obtain an Australian visa, applicants will have to complete an occupational skills assessment, pass an immigration Points Test, and meet the other GSM basic requirements.\r\n\r\nThe skilled migration programme is due to undergo some radical changes on 1 July 2012. It is expected that these changes will result in fewer people being able to qualify. It is also likely to mean that processing times for applications will take longer.\r\n\r\nThose wishing to be assessed under the present regulations are being urged to apply as soon as possible for a skills assessment test. An immigration application cannot be made until the assessment has been completed, and applicants have also managed to pass an English language test.\r\n\r\nFor people wishing to work in Australia who are not being sponsored by an employer, a list has been put together called the Skilled Occupation List. This has the names of jobs which are available.\r\n\r\nFor qualified engineers these jobs include structural, civil, mechanical and electrical engineers. There are also managerial positions available. All of those applying for work will need to prove that they have the equivalent level of education that comes with a bachelor’s degree. In some cases, employers may need to see proof of on the job experience.
