As many as 80,000 jobs in the Canadian province of British Columbia could be taken by Irish construction workers, revealed a delegation from Canada which is in Ireland this week.
The British Columbia Construction Association’s president Manly MacLachlan said that there were endless opportunities for qualified workers in the province, according to the Irish Times.
Mr MacLachlan is part of an 11-person delegation which has travelled from Alberta and British Colombia to Ireland to find skilled labour in order to help fill the thousands of vacancies which are currently in the construction trade. The ministry of jobs, tourism and innovation from British Columbia is also represented.
The delegation is set to hold discussions with government departments, the Construction Industry Federation Fas and other groups in the week ahead. They are also due to attend next weekend’s Dublin Working Abroad Expo in the RDS. Roughly 335,000 job openings are expected in British Colombia between 2012 and 2014, which is more than 10 times bigger in size than Ireland and has a population of roughly 4.5 million.
Mr MacLachlin told the Irish Times that the visit had two objectives: to understand the Irish apprenticeship system better in order to establish if it is similar to Western Canada’s system, and to investigate possibilities of attracting skilled construction workers. He added that they have a considerable amount of scheduled work and a significant shortfall of skilled workers.
