New research suggests that well over half of UK families would consider moving abroad in search of a better lifestyle. The study found that two out of every three of the respondents admitted that they would emigrate in order to escape a society that has become obsessed with celebrity, the poor weather and economic gloom.
The University of Huddersfield conducted survey found that other reasons for wanting to get out of the UK included a lack of neighbourliness and a wish for a better sense community and a more positive attitude to being able to achieve.
The country most families said they would emigrate to was Australia, followed by America, Canada and New Zealand. Other European countries such as Italy, France and Spain were also a popular choice.
The number one reason given for wanting to leave the UK for well over half of the families questioned was the weather and miserable conditions. Nearly half said they wanted to escape the economic slump and find somewhere that was cheaper to live. More than a third said they would like to live in a place where people did not have such bad manners.
Author of the report, Prof Paul Ward, said many families who do decide to emigrate from the UK choose countries that are ex-colonies because they want to live in a place that still retains an element if Britishness.
